FELIX: A Series of New Writing

K. Silem Mohammad is the author of three collections of poetry. His poems have been published in many of today's leading small press literary journals online and in print. He is co-editor with Richard Greene of two essay collections. Mohammad edits the poetry journal Abraham Lincoln with Anne Boyer and maintains the poetry and poetics blog {lime tree}: Practicalities and Possibilities, at lime-tree.blogspot.com.

Dogs in Special Collections: An Exhibit of Books Containing Illustrations of Dogs

The exhibit features a variety of illustrations showcasing dogs, spanning from Shakespeare's time to the present. The exhibit will run through October 2009.

July-December 2009

From Madeira to Maui to the Mainland to Madison
Mills Music Library

This exhibit marks the 130th anniversary of the arrival of the ukulele into Hawaiian music. The exhibit includes instruments, recordings, method books, song collections, and a wealth of information about the instrument and its players. The exhibit has a companion website featuring audio and video examples, additional listening, and a list of print and web sources used for the exhibit text.

It's Good For You: 100 Years of the Art & Science of Eating
Ebling Library
3rd Floor Historical Reading Room

This is a historical exhibition in conjuction with UW-Madison's Go Big Read In Defense of Food event. An opening reception will be help on Tuesday, September 22 from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. Themes include the history of the food pyramid, the story of Victory Gardens, the confusion inherent in diet advice, the "voice of authority" in cookbooks and nutrition literature, the marketing of food products, and the evolution of hospital diets.

All About Me: Book Arts

Vision, Strength, Access - VSA Arts of Wisconsin - proudly presents a variety of books created by students with disabilities who participated in an "All About Me: Book Arts"“All About Me” artist residency. Mounted in conjunction with the Wisconsin Book Festival with its theme “courage,” the exhibit features unique handmade books that combine original writings. The VSA artist residencies were held at schools in Madison, Milwaukee, Brookfield, Wauwautosa, and Wausau during the 2008-2009 school year. Students ages 9 to 21 from these areas participated in hands-on sessions facilitated by teaching artists Nancee Killoran, Linda Mathes and Petra Press. The students explored papermaking, bookbinding, drawing, and printmaking as well as a variety of book structures.  The exhibit features both collaborative “exquisite corpse” books as well as books done by individual students. VSA Arts of Wisconsin promotes the creative power of children and adults with disabilities.

Portals to an Architecture

On Friday, October 16 at 3 pm in 1610 Engineering Hall, join Wendt Library staff, UW-Madison colleagues and engineering alumni for a presentation by photographer, artist, College of Engineering alum, and current MIT architecture student Steve Preston.

Preston's “Portals to an Architecture” is a retrospective photo exhibit documenting the creation of a temporary installation of giant, intertwined paper-tube arches on Engineering Mall in 2006. A selection of his Portals photos are on display in the Wendt Library Gallery.

Library staff members conduct workshops throughout the year at no charge for UW-Madison faculty, staff and students. Program topics range from using the library catalog and conducting research in specialized databases to finding grant information and creating simple Web pages. Friends Book Sale

The largest used book sale in Wisconsin, the next one to be held Wednesday through Saturday, October 7-10 in Memorial Library at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, includes more than 15,000 books covering almost any subject.

The semiannual sales, organized by the Friends of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library, offer books on almost every subject.
