MADISON, Wis. –MADISON, Wis- The 2009 Librarians of the Year were announced yesterday, April 30, 2009, during an annual awards banquet
held in Lathrop Hall. The recipients of this year’s honors were Steven Dast of the UW Digital Collections Center and Mary Rader.
Steven Dast received the Librarian of the Year award given to a librarian who has worked over ten years at the Libraries. Steven has worked at UW Madison’s Memorial Library since 1991 holding a variety of positions including: Library Services Assistant/Microfilm Technician, Leadworker in Microimaging, Digital Project Coordinator, and Head of the Project Assessment and Development Unit. He currently is the Digital Asset Librarian and works on nearly every project undertaken by the UW Digital Collection Center. As Digital Asset Librarian he ensures that a final project is finished timely and placed into production. Steven’s colleagues credit him for often coming up with new and better ways to handle the UWDCC work flow and solve ongoing problems. His co-workers also highlighted his intelligence, hard work, and quirky humor as someone behind the scenes that is very deserving of this honor.
Mary Rader won the award for Librarian of the Year for under 10 years of service. She joined the General Library System in 2004. Through Mary’s leadership, respect, and collaboration with her peers she has been able to shape policies for collection development and liaison services within Memorial Library and she has a track record for getting things done. In addition, letter writers commented that it is the focus and in-depth knowledge that Mary brings to complicated reference questions that helps make her such an asset to our library.
